A lesson to learn from Peter Jackson (or, stating the obvious, part infinity plus eight)

(Disclaimer: The following, while containing at least some opinions the author can sort of be said to hold, is more of an exploration than a presentation of ideas. It should all therefore be taken with a few barrelfuls of salt.) So I’m watching the appendices on the Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition DVD, and as [...]

All the King’s Men

This is one of the most realistic portrayals of politics I believe I have ever seen. Sean Penn stars as a populist politician who goes at the corrupt Louisiana state elite, and once elected state governor turns out to be ruthless in his pursuit of his idealist agenda.

A piteous handful of movies, January to June 2009

So, I summed up the books I’ve read so far this year in the previous post; now the turn has come to the movies. Same concept, same execution, only this time I’ll skip a hell of a lot more than I did with the novels. Oh, and for those who might wonder, no, Watchmen isn’t [...]

Stranger than Fiction

Watched Stranger than Fiction again tonight, and I was happy to discover that it was as good on the second viewing and in company as it was on the first and alone. The plot is a bit hard to describe without ruining it all, as discovering what the hell is going on is one of the [...]

Terje’s Best of 2008

Okay, so I had intended to choose the ten best books I read in 2008, the ten best movies I saw for the first time, and the ten best albums I bought, right? Unfortunately, it turned out I hadn’t really read as many as ten great books this year, so I decided to throw in [...]

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

The first Elizabeth movie is one of my all-time favourites, so I had rather high hopes for Elizabeth: the Golden Age when I watched it a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, they were not fulfilled. Where I had expected more political drama, the focus was all on Elizabeth’s love life, and her struggles to be a woman [...]

Fight Club

I watched Fight Club again, a couple of weeks ago. It’s been a few years since the last time I watched it, but I still clearly remembered the plot. What struck me this time was how well the movie has kept; for a movie with such a major plot twist, it is remarkable how great [...]

The Matrix

Just watched The Matrix, but seeing as I’ve already reviewed this movie somewhere else on this blog, I’m going to limit myself to pointing out how much the whole Matrix/human batteries thing seems like something out of Marx. You’ve got your people, right, who can be likened to either the people in Marxist theory in general, [...]

Interview with the Vampire

Man, I did not until a few seconds ago realise what an inane title Interview with the Vampire really is; it is scary to see just how much an article can matter… Anyway, I had my sister over for dinner a couple of days ago, and we watched this thing, mainly because we both remembered the [...]
